Stronger Together: The Role of Connectivity in Safeguarding Functioning Coastal Ecosystems under Global Change

In the Horizon Europe SeaStrong project, the Marine Symbiomes Research Group studies how mangroves, seagrass meadows, and coral reefs are functionally connected through microbial processes in a warming ocean. In particular, our group focuses on how microorganisms regulate biogeochemical cycles and ecosystem services across linked coastal habitats. It also investigates how these processes support ecosystem resilience under climate stress. Within the project, we aim to identify key microbial pathways that connect habitats and sustain essential services, including nutrient cycling, carbon sequestration, and coastal protection. SeaStrong brings together an international consortium of 15 partners coordinated by the University of Bremen. The project includes six partners from Small Island Developing States—Belize, Seychelles, and Fiji—where field research takes place in close collaboration with local communities.
